Ex-ANTHRAX Singer DAN NELSON Says His Version Of 'Fight' Is 'The Way It Was Meant To Sound'
October 10, 2010Former ANTHRAX singer Dan Nelson has slammed the band's performance of the new song "Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't" with Joey Belladonna on vocals, saying that the original version of the track — which was first written and recorded while Nelson was in ANTHRAX — was "the way it was meant to sound."
ANTHRAX performed "Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't" with Belladonna for the first time during this past Friday night's (October 8) concert at at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York as part of the Jägermeister Music Tour with SLAYER and MEGADETH.
Writing on his Twitter profile the next morning, ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian stated about the Uniondale concert, "NY show didn't disappoint. Craziest pit of the tour! We played new one 'Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't' for the first time in the States."
A short time later, Nelson took to his own Twitter profile and Facebook page to correct Ian, writing, "'Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't' for the first time in the States, eh?? Wouldn't that be at the Double Door in Chicago when we played the song WE ALL wrote together?? I guess Chicago is no longer in the States??" and linking to a YouTube clip of the Nelson-fronted version of the song as performed on May 28, 2008 at the Double Door in Chicago, Illinois. A subsequent tweet from Nelson included a link to a YouTube performance clip [see below] of "Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't" from June 30, 2009 in The Hague, The Netherlands, featuring Nelson on vocals, with an accompanying message, "The way it was meant to sound… METAL."
Earlier today, Nelson made another posting on his Twitter profile, writing, "There really is no honor among THIEVES. Back to real life, with true family and friends who won't STEAL or stab you in the back for MONEY!" He then clarified, "I have nothing but respect for Joey Belladonna as a vocalist... If it came across as otherwise, that was not my intention. I was simply talking about lyrics/melodies being used that I wrote... That is all."
In a recent interview with the Orlando Rock Music Examiner, ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante was asked about the circumstances that led to the end of the group's collaboration with Nelson. "I can't even begin to tell you what happened because it's so...you wouldn't believe it, anyway! Even if I told you!" he said before adding, "We've all taken this approach to this that, really, we're not talking about him. We're not giving him any, any attention at all. . . I'll just say it was a very bad emotional rollercoaster for all of us. I never want to be reminded of that again."
"Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't" was recorded with Dan for what was supposed to be the next ANTHRAX album, "Worship Music", but ended up getting shelved — along with the rest of the CD — following the departure of Nelson and return of Belladonna.
Since returning from their recent European tour, the members of ANTHRAX have begun writing and rehearsing for their new album which is expected out in early 2011.
